Body part art in Rahway
By Dan Bischoff/For The Star-Ledger
On Sunday, the Arts Guild of New Jersey will open “Part & Parcel: The Deconstruction of the Female Form in Contemporary Art,” a group show of artists whose work involves physical dismemberment of the female form.
But this isn’t resurgent Jack-the-Ripperism — it’s feminism, as it is in the work of Kiki Smith, Louise Bourgeois and Frida Kahlo. They cut up women’s bodies as a statement about their physicality, their political presence, their social perception; artists often dismember themselves in effigy to express personal alienation or incapacity. Nothing is as body-centered as the visual arts. Sixteen artists are included, some from as far away as Portugal and Canada.
The Arts Guild of New Jersey is at 1670 Irving St., Rahway. The exhibition opens with a free, public reception on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.; it will be up through April 26. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. and Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Call (732) 381-7511 or visit agnj.org. A full-color exhibition catalog for the exhibition will be available at the Arts Guild during and following the opening reception.

Started in 2005, chaNorth is chashama’s artist residency program located on a 5-acre estate in Pine Plains, New York. Combining live-in studios with private workspaces, shared gallery areas, a communal kitchen, an ‘organic internship’ with McEnroe Farms , fresh foods, family-style dinners and a serene setting, chaNorth encourages a sense of community through a dialogue of art and life as one. With backgrounds in a wide-range of mediums, seven artists live and create during their one-month session, and present work in an Open Studio event from June-October each year.
